How did the greatest Greek warrior of all time lost from a tortoise?
And what you can learn from it?
Welcome to another edition of “The backlog of Soubhagya”
Thought Experiment
In Greek philosophy, Achilles or Achilleus was a hero in the Trojan war. He is the greatest warrior of all the greek warriors.
So how was the greatest warrior of all time was defeated by a tortoise, could you believe that? but this actually happened.
Zeno’s paradox, The greek philosopher devised a bunch of philosophical questions like they used to prove that “motion is nothing but an illusion”.
Zeno’s teacher Parmenides was the first to introduce the paradox of Achilles and the tortoise.
Achilles and the tortoise
In a race, the quickest runner can never overtake the slowest, since the pursuer must first reach the point whence the pursued started, so that the slower must always hold a lead. — Aristotle
Zeno Achellies paradox | Image: Wikipedia
In the argument Achilles and the tortoise is in a foot race and the tortoise is allowed to begin 100m meters away from the starting point where Achilles has to begin.
For example, In the constant speed, after some time Achilles came to the point where the tortoise began but the tortoise has been moved some little amount of distance let say 2m.
To pass that 2-meter Achilles has to become to the point where the toise has now with some amount of time. But after coming to that point where the tortoise had, then the tortoise will be moved some more distance, and this phenomenon will be continued.
This argument is also similar to the “dichotomy paradox”, where they also found a similar thing.
Zeno argued that achellies could never be win as the distance between the pair increase.

This is one of the very early examples of thought experiments.
